We hope that our website will give you an insight into our Academy – the way we work and what we offer, but we also hope it reveals something of the vision which drives us to continually improve as an Academy.  At Balaam Wood Academy we have a very clear aim where we want every pupil to leave us prepared for life and work in the 21st century.  That they are able to make the most of every opportunity afforded to them and that they contribute positively to society.

Remote learning Update
Accessing remote learning

**Year 10 teachers are live online during lessons to support pupils with real time responses.**

Whilst your child is away from school we are committed to ensuring that they have access to the full curriculum and are able to complete work that they would normal complete in school.

All pupils , who are working at home must follow their normal timetable while they are away from school. Subjects will be setting work for completion and pupils should aim to mirror their school day as closely as possible to make sure they complete work in a timely manner. Some practical lessons, such as PE, will not be setting remote learning.

In Year 7-10 work can be found on Class Charts and Year 11 will use Teams to access remote learning. Year 10 and 11 BTEC PE classes will use Teams to continue to receive guidance around their coursework and revision.

Year 11 teachers will be live online during their timetabled lessons to support pupils with any questions they may have and to provide real time responses. All pupils will be expected to complete all work set and upload completed work via assignments. We will be closely monitoring who is accessing  and completing the work and staff will be in touch if a pupil is not completing work

All work will be online by 9am the day of the lesson and pupils should aim to complete the work and submit to the teacher the same day.

----------January opening of schools - 30th December 2020----------

Following the announcement made by the Government this evening (30.12.20) please be aware that Year 11 pupils will return to school on the 11th January. Years 7 - 10 will return on the 18th January. We will put in place provision for pupils where parents/carers are key workers or pupils who may be in need of additional support.   We will be in touch with individual families as appropriate to discuss the arrangements.

Further details will follow for Year 11 in relation to their mock examinations.  They should continue to prepare for the exams with the expectation that they will commence at some point during the week beginning the 11th January.

We are currently planning the roll-out of in school Covid 19 testing.  We are aware that there may be anxieties around this with pupils and families.  Please note that we will be contacting families as soon as possible with more details.  An overview of the testing process is now available on the website.

Details in relation to remote learning will be shared as soon as possible.  Arrangements will also be made for the provision of free school meals.

You may be aware of an announcement by the Department for Education today to stagger the start of the new term in January for certain year groups. Please be aware that this is also the first time that the Academy had been made aware of this decision and we are working hard to plan our provision.

As such all Year 11 pupils will be expected to physically attend from Tuesday 5th January. They will be following their normal timetable. We will also be making arrangements for the children of key workers and pupils who may need additional support to attend school during this week. All other year groups will be working remotely from home.

I would ask you to bear these arrangements in mind particularly if you may need to make agreements for child care during the week commencing the 4th January. We will continue to update you over the coming days with additional information and arrangements.

Start Right is accessible for pupils arriving between 8.15am - 8.20am as pupils will need to be escorted upstairs. If pupils arrive after 8.20 they will be asked to go to the playground with the rest of their year group. Please note that due to the inclusive nature of Start Right sessions, these activities will need to be cross bubble. We appreciate your support during these unusual times.

UPDATE: Face Coverings in School
Since we wrote to you yesterday it has been confirmed that the Department for Education have advised that Birmingham schools will now be moving to Tier 1. This means that face coverings should be worn by staff and students when moving around the premises, outside of classrooms, such as in corridors and communal areas. As such we strongly recommend that you ensure your child brings and appropriately wears a mask from Monday morning. For guidance in relation to masks please refer to our Guide to Parents and Carers. A new survey has been launched this month aimed at Birmingham-based parents/carers of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

The short survey, which takes around 10-15 minutes to complete, captures feedback from families about their experience of the Birmingham SEND service, including views on the support provided by the service during the Covid-19 pandemic.

FSM Update 20/04/2020: We are working as hard as possible to get the latest FSM vouchers out to FSM Families but as per the media coverage, the DfE system is currently struggling due to the overwhelming demand. We will update all our FSM parents as soon as we know more.

School meal Update: We have yet to receive the information we need from Birmingham City Council to send out the electronic vouchers.  The processing of the information for the council is a huge undertaking – so we all need to be patient and supportive.  We will continue to provide packed lunches for collection from school (12.00 – 12.30) until the situation is resolved.

All Free School Meal Families will be receiving an Email/SMS providing a unique digital eVoucher to use with the system that has been put in place by Birmingham City Council for FSM provision. As soon as we have received this information from the council we will get it out to yourselves. Please see the attached document below for guidance on how the system will work.

We are proposing to use a voucher scheme to allow families to purchase for themselves food in relation to free school meals. We are hopeful (but this has not yet been confirmed) that we will be able to launch the voucher scheme from Monday 30th March 2020. The scheme will operate via an electronic voucher being either emailed or sent via SMS to a chosen device. Could you please complete the form by Friday 27th March 2020.

We are only expecting pupils tomorrow from families who were contacted by the school on Friday. Even if you were contacted we would urge you to consider if sending your child to school is your only option.  The best way for us to combat the virus is to ‘socially distance’ from each other as best we can while continuing to safeguard our community.

Provision in school will be similar to that of a pupil working at home. Pupils will be completing the work folders that have already been distributed.  To allow us to follow guidance – pupils will be working in a situation which sees us socially distancing from each other.  Our aim is to keep pupils and staff safe and to support the response of the nation to the current situation.

There are notifications going around social media informing parents they need to share their bank details in order to receive FSM money.
They vary in what they say and how they are worded so the important message to parents is the same as always, do not share bank details with anyone and to make sure any advice you are getting is from a reliable and recognised source.

The government have announced that all schools will be closed from Friday 20th March 2020 to help fight the spread of Coronavirus. However, parents/carers who are frontline key workers (currently identified as: health workers, Police, supermarket delivery drivers and carers for the vulnerable and elderly) have access to provision for their children in the Academy.
