We believe in offering a broad and balanced Mathematics Curriculum at King Edward VI Balaam
Wood Academy, to give our pupils the knowledge, skills and confidence to become successful in the
21st Century World, whatever their chosen path.
We will:
- Provide a Mathematics Curriculum that delivers the National Curriculum in each key stage,
building upon previous learning and pupils’ current knowledge and understanding - Encourage students to be inquisitive, question the world around them and develop a lifelong
interest in learning. - Enable pupils to become Mathematically fluent to enable them to be ready to learn
throughout their lives. - Enable pupils to develop strategies, skills and knowledge that will enable their schema to
grow and become more secure in every year at Balaam Wood. - Develop a passion for Mathematics for students to continue throughout their school life and
beyond. - Endeavour to enable our students to see the connections that exist in Maths and the World.
- Build curiosity about the mathematics around us and ask about ‘why’ and ‘how’ concepts
arise. - Develop students reasoning through lines of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and
generalisations, developing arguments through justifications and proof using mathematical
language. - Ensure that students become more fluent with the fundamentals of mathematics, through
varied, frequent practice and increasingly complex concepts over time. - Prepare students to be able to problem solve by applying mathematics to a variety of
routine and non-routine problems, with increasing sophistication. Activating prior
knowledge in a deliberate way. - Build on prior knowledge by assessing what that prior knowledge was, how well has it been
stored in long term memory, and what needs to retaught and gone back to. - Develop a student’s self-sufficiency in managing their personal finances beyond secondary
school. - Be inclusive and meet all students’ needs to ensure that all learners are able to access the
curriculum and achieve, but also to challenge and engage the most able students,
encouraging them to study Maths and related courses beyond GCSE. - Always as a faculty be discussing, altering, adapting the curriculum in order that it is the best
it can possibly be. ‘Books are like statues, but curriculum is a garden’
